I would like to suggest Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres. They actually were in the area already, and their facility was hit by the earthquake as well. I donated to them today.
Their website includes the programs they host as well as a comprehensive breakdown of how they allocate donations. You can also request to donate to a different fund, which a few charities are asking for so they can keep existing programs going while they deal with this disaster. doctorswithoutborders.org/ Note the picture on the main page--that's the courtyard of the building they were working in.
They have had to move the hospital outside in order to care for people because parts of their building are now unsafe. I have also included a link to the Yarn Harlot's blog (Stephanie Pearl-McPhee), where she talks about donating to them. Her brother-in-law is the head of one of the chapters of MSF so she gets a lot of information from him.

At times of natural disasters of the scale and magnitude of the scale of the Haiti quake the Red Cross is perhaps the best place to route your donation. Sadly, during these times of crisis many unscrupulous individuals come out of the wood work to try and take advantage of the better nature of humanity. The Red Cross, especially if you designate the destination for your donation, I sthe best place.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
