Something that can be quite versatile. I'm interested in buying a decent mountain bike to get me started in the sport. What are recommendations for a bike that will keep going with me as I (hopefully) grow in the sport--atleast for three or four years?

I used to have a Schwinn Mountain bike It was a while back and I don't remember the model number, but I know it was a Schwinn. I don't ride anymore, but it was a good basic mountain bike that didn't give me any problems. But, you should go to a dealer that lets you test a few to see how you like them.
But since I had a good experience, I'm happy to suggest that brand. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
