My daughter is a violin teacher who just finished her college degree in Music education. During her college years, she developed an appreciation for fiddle as well as violin, and she came to appreciate both. Here are some things to keep in mind: 1.In general, the instrument looks the same and is tuned the same.
2. Fiddle music is generally played in first position (the hand seldom travels very far up the neck of the instrument).3. Fiddle music is predominately country or even more bluegrass.
4. Country and bluegrass fiddle music is very often in the key of D or G. Violin music is all over the board.
5. Double stops (playing two notes at once) in fiddle music are often played on open strings in the key of D or G. This is not so much true in violin music.
6. Fiddle music has some unique rhythmic patterns and bowing techniques which are not used so much in violin music.7. Violinists, with the exception of the soloists, typically play in large groups or "sections" in which they all play the same part.
This is a very general statement, and most violinist are very comfortable playing in small groups or as soloists. Fiddles are played most often as part of a small group where they are the only fiddle.8. Fiddle music is folk for dancing, Violin music is classical for listening.
There are very few "crossover" musicians who play both fiddle and violin music. One who does is Mark O'Connor. In fact, if you go to youtube and search for Mark O'connor, you will find subheadings of both "fiddle" and "violin" under his name. It might be good for you to go and listen to some of each.
Here is a video of something I like that we don't see enough, a mixture of folk and classical. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIalvXTPyA0.
I am learning violin for the past 2 years. When I asked my teacher she told the following differences which I feel is apt. There are several key differences between violin and fiddle music.
The goal of violin music is beauty and power. The goal of fiddling is danceability. Violin music is often harder to play than it sounds.
Fiddle music is usually easier to play than it sounds. Violin performance takes more strength and concentration to play than fiddle music. Fiddle music is usually improvised in part.
Violin music is rarely improvisational. It's easier to learn how to fiddle than how to play violin. Regards.
Simple answer time: the fiddle and the violin are the same instrument. The difference is in the way it is played. If you want to learn either, you can eventually learn both.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
