Loneliness is when you feel alone, even if you have friends, if they are all busy on the afternoon you'd like company you may experience feeling lonely. Sometimes loneliness can cause feelings of depression especially if the loneliness is persistent and indicative of a person's inability to connect with others. The two terms are not interchangeable as depression can be caused by any number of things, including having just had a baby!

Loneliness is one of the characteristics of depression. If someone is lonely, this may not mean they have depression. Depression is usually characterized by fatigue, absent feelings of joy, feelings of worthlessness, feeling lonely, having anxiety, thoughts of suicide and constant sadness.
Loneliness could turn into depression if there's no social interaction at all for long periods of time and other symptoms like the above arise, but it's more easily curable by taking the initiative to talk to people at work, in their neighborhood, volunteering or even just talking on the phone. It is possible to become depressed because you are lonely, But equally, you can be lonely part of the time and when you are not, because you are with friends or family, then you do not feel depressed. Depression is longer lasting and doesn't go away because you are not lonely.
Equally if you are depressed, this can make you become remote from people and therefore lead you to become lonely which of course exasperates the depression. If you feel lonely, try to stop it becoming worse, phone up a friend whom you haven't spoken to for a while, they may well be feeling lonely as well. Try to arrange a meeting with friends or family once a week or more, if you can, then when you are feeling lonely, you will have something to look forward to.
The main difference between loneliness and depression is that depression is a long-term emotional disorder. Loneliness, concurrently, is a temporary feeling of abandonment which is brought on with pro-longed isolation or lack of attention from people one care’s about. Loneliness can also be a symptom of depression.

These symptoms combine to make depression a much more serious disorder. It is also important to note that prolonged bouts of loneliness can become pathological.
Once loneliness becomes pathological, or learned and accepted, it can lead to depression. Whereupon a person may begin to experience the various other serious symptoms of depression in concert with loneliness. It is at this point that the individual should research how to diagnose depression and how to treat depression.
