What's the difference between gym and gymnastics?

Gymnastics is an activity that is performed in gym class (which may be part of how gym class got its name). Gymnastics is also its own sport. In artistic gymnastics, gymnasts (commonly children and teenagers), perform formal gymnastics moves both on the floor and on gymnastics equipment (bars, beam, pommel horse, vault etc.) Rhythmic gymnastics involves props and dance moves as well as equipment.
