Just a few... 1) Most importantly, you need anti-virus software. If you want a free one that is as good as the paying AV apps you want AVG Free: free.grisoft.com/. If you feel more comfortable with the household names I prefer Symantec (Norton) amazon.com/Norton-Antivirus-2008-1-User/... but honestly all of the big names are comparable.2) Malware/Spyware: I prefer Spybot hands down.
Again all of the popular ones are comparable and each will pick up some problems that the others didn't however Spybot will actually PREVENT a LOT of spywares from infecting you to begin with.. you know what they say about prevention. SpyBot: http://fileforum.betanews.com/sendfile/1043809773/1/spybotsd152.exe Tutorial: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html 3) Firewall: If you are behind a router with firewall enabled then forget about this. That is youur best firewall option.
Otherwise I would install a firewall option. My preferred software firewall is BlackICE defender http://www.amazon.com/Pearson-Software-1575954451-Black-Defender/dp/B00004WKK0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1203885540&;sr=1-1 but as I no longer need a software based firewall I haven't installed it on my vista machine to know if it will install or not. Hope this helps .
Anti-virus and anti-spyware The minimal you should download and use is an anti-virus and anti-spyware. Personally, I'd recommend: Avira anti-virus - out of the ones I tried (including AVG and Avast! ), it seems to work best (combination of features, performance, and fewer false positives) Ad-Aware and Spybot for anti-spyware - they both do a decent job but scan for slightly different things - Spybot also has quite a few useful utilities under Tools menu.
For best performance, I would suggest not using real-time protection in any of the programs. Just be a little careful with what you download/execute and run them manually once a week or so (it's what I do and I've never had any problems). Sources: Experience .
AVG and ZoneAlarm I'm not sure what I'd call a minimum (or if there's any such thing) for computer security, but AVG Anti-Virus and ZoneAlarm aren't bad, and both have a free version (not an expiring trial, I've been using both for over a year).
This seems to be a common question here in Askville. I have a new system loaded with Vista Ultimate and.. I have used AVG from Grisoft. It's free, has worked fine on my system and seems to be using little system resources compared to the pay ones.

You need anti-virus, a firewall, and spyware protection. Get AVG or Avast for anti-virus. Get Comodo for the highest rated firewall.
And for spyware, I like the following three: SuperAntiSpyware, AdAware, Spybot. I like to immunize my systems with Spybot to prevent common infections. All of the above are free, and will provide a good level of protection..
