My son just did an experiment for his high school science fair. He used five 5 gallon tanks. When we bought the tanks, we asked the "fish expert" at the store, and he told him he could put 5 goldfish in each 5 gallon tank.

We now have one tank left and three goldfish. I don't know if it had anything to do with the experiment, but they were dropping like flies... Anyway, it might depend upon what type of fish you are putting in the 5 gallons of water, but I think four goldfish in each would have worked out better for my son and the fish.
