What's your family's favorite holiday tradition?

I married my husband 32 years ago and I was immediately included in their family traiditon of getting together to eat and sing "Christmas Carols. " It is an awesome thing to do. They have a large family, 6 children and later all the grandchildren.

We would each bring a speciality, dripped roast beef, desserts with all the extras. Everyone would dress in something Christmas oriented and when the kids were little one of the men would dress up as Santa. My sister-in-law would play the piano as we sang along to the songs with scripts of the lyrics. Many times the little ones would solo and it was hilarious.

As time went on, the kids grew older but not one of them didn't look forward to this occasion. We would conclude with the 12 days of Christmas with Grandma and Grandpa singing "And a Partridge In A Pear Tree. " It was hilarious and heartwarming since Grandpa has recently passed away, we have this on video and it is something we will treasure forever.

That's so lovely, mamasue5! Ours is now Thanksgiving. I told the kids when they got married that we would never compete with their in-laws for Christmas.

Our family 'thing' would be Thanksgiving, instead. So they are flying and driving in from different states this Tuesday. We are expecting a houseful of twelve or more this week.

They will all sleep here! Because we will be combining Thanksgiving and Christmas, here is the schedule for Wed-Fri: Wednesday -- I'll have the pieces made, but each family will have it's own gingerbread house to put together and decorate. Windows and doorways are cut out and the pieces used for shutters and doors.

We put favorite pictures from cards or photos in the windows and doorways. During the day I'll make a giant stew and a big loaf of Basque Shepherd's Bread and that will be dinner. I will also make the pies for the next day.

Thursday -- good brunch and then we all get together to make the dinner. 28 lb free-range turkey this year that hubby will pick up afternoon of the day before from the butcher's. Friday -- all autumn decorations get packed away for the year and the Christmas tree goes up, along with any other decorations we have time for.

Turkey sandwiches for lunch and a pre-made lasagne for dinner with salad. After dinner, around the tree, we will exchange Christmas presents and sing the carols with the candles lit. There will also be the Bible reading.

Saturday they will start leaving, and the food will be 'munch all you can leftovers' from the previous days. So it's Thanksgiving, and we all are looking forward to it and so happy and thankful to have our family.

Family dinners, spending Christmas day with my parents For as long as I could remember Christmas dinner was a formal but playful occassion. The entire clan gathered. There were years when some families couldn't come due to goegraphy etc but there were never less than 20-25 of us gathered on any given holiday.

The good china and silver glittered in the candle light with multicolored reflections from the tree lights glinting off the brass candlesticks. There was always a fire in the fireplace. We all brought food to share. My uncle always brought the heat and serve rolls ( a beloved family friend had made yeast rolls for years but passed away).

My mother always succeeded in burning the bottoms of the rolls so it was tradition to have the little burnt bottoms left over with the scraps. The youngest family member always read the story of Jesus' birth to the clan. We sang a few carols then slowly drifted back to our individual homes.

At home we always opened one gift on Christmas eve. On Christmas day we woke up early. The children were held back until the grown ups took pictures of "Santa's work".

We were each handed a bowl in which to dump our stockings. The stockings always had fruit and nuts to munch on while we opened presents. When I had my own children we did things the same way.

After the presents were opened we made a good breakfast then got dressed. The kids picked out a favorite gift to show Granny and Grandaddy and off we went to spend the afternoon at their house. Now the magic has faded.

We still gather for Christmas but we use disposable dishes and plastic ware. My kids are grown and scattered. We no longer dress up for the dinner.

Many of our traditions have faded. The era of dressing up and putting out the china is gone. One thing remains - the youngest member still reads the bible story - some traditions are forever.

Making Christmas Ornaments My favorite holiday tradition is making hand crafted Christmas ornaments. As kids we would cut up the pictures from the Christmas cards that came in and we would decorate the cutouts with glitter and shiny bricbrac around the edges. Then we'd fasten gold to the top and had new Christmas ornaments.

When I was around 10 we started making ornaments with sequin beaded kits. I loved working on them and I remember the company that made the kits was the Holiday Handicraft Company in Danbury, CT. I guess we bought a lot of them.

We also painted plaster ornaments and I made a lot out of felt and pinecones. My favorite ornaments were ones that we made out of wooden clothespins. We started out with a kit and made a wooden soldier, ice skaters, santa etc and had to glue on felt and wooden doo-dad accessories.

Once we finished the kit, I still wanted to make more, so my mom bought us wooden clothespins and felt and pompoms. My favorite ornament is one my dad made in 1975. He made a shark out of the clothespin, painted it grey and gave it wicked teeth, but he was holding a red Christmas present.

Jaws was the big movie that year and it obviously had pop culture appeal. I hang that on the tree in th front every year because it brings back some happy memories. My daughter is almost four and we started this with her last year.

She painted some Disney plaster ornaments for the tree. We date them all and now most of what is on my tree is homemade. I think it is a great holiday tradition that I plan on continuing for the years to come.

3 days of family for Christmas I love our family Christmas traditions. On Christmas eve, we all get together at church for the candle light service and then go to Grandma's house for dinner. We end up staying late visiting, listening to Christmas music.

There are always a couple of presents that the kids get to open up on Christmas eve, new jammies or bedtime stories. Until my great grandma passed away she would sew all the girls matching pajamas. Then we go home for the night and meet back early the next morning, still in our PJs.

Everyone brings their presents and Santa brings the kids' presents there. By 9 am we are all sitting in the living room and taking turns opening presents. It is so fun to see what everyone got.

The little ones don't always wait for turns, and they have so many presents with the big family we have all wanting to spoil them :-) The adults do a name exchange so we get one big present, and a few others. But everyone gets presents for the kids. Then we all retire to a huge breakfast, home made tamales and eggs, fresh salsa, rolls, bacon. So much good food.

After breakfast we take turns modeling our new clothes and we all play with all the kids' new toys. We stay together all day, eating a bit more, sneaking off for a short nap, playing games. The next morning a lot of the women meet up at the mall and hit all the sales.

Then everyone comes back to the men who hung out together watching sports or movies. We all have another big dinner together of left overs and more yummy desserts. I love Christmas time with my family!

My wife’s family did something like that on our first Christmas together. I think they were testing me. There is just something in that family’s genes that causes them to be totally tone deaf.

I can’t sing so I fit right in but I know that I can’t sing. My in-laws love to sing and to sing loudly so I think that that first Christmas of carol singing was to see if I was tough enough to be part of their family. My wife says I’m full of poop but they haven’t done it since.

We have several family traditions and they usually kick off with the blessing of the Christmas trees. As each home in our little family group here finishes their tree I take some Holy Water and bless each tree. When the last of the three trees is up we all sit down with some popcorn and watch “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, the cartoon not that horrible movie. As the season progresses there are other little traditions like chocolate coins in the shoes of our grandson on the morning of the feast of St. Nicholas and always a trip to Bristol to see the lights at the racetrack.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
