When and how did golf become a spectator sport?

The attraction is two fold for me when it comes to Golf: First, I have played the sport many times and have realized how difficult it is to master. So I can respect any person who can dominate the game, drive the fairway consistently, drain a long put, hook around a tree, land on the green in 2 on a par 5, sink a hole in one. This is pure brilliance as I can do that only with luck, not on command.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Second, TIGER WOODS. Before the whole scandal, Tiger Woods was simply the greatest god-like athlete. The passion, the determination, the domination, the skill, the brilliance.

He was everything an athlete could be. He drove the sport and he drove a culture and generation of youth. Seeing him dominate golf was probably one of the greatest things you can see on television.

Especially for majors on a Sunday, Tiger in his red shirt, on top of the leaderboard, poised for a win. This was almost religious for me and having Tiger taking down a tournament was pretty much historic. These are pretty much the only two reasons I can ever watch golf.

When Tiger took some time away from the game, so did I. Hopefully this gives you a little more insight.

I've heard that televised golf is for people who think televised bowling is too exciting. Actually, golf has been around in one form or another since the 1300's. About a hundred years after the first recorded reference to golf, it was banned in Scotland because the soldiers were spending too much time playing golf and not enough time on their military training.

The ban wasn't lifted for another 50 years, and man has been fascinated with knocking a little ball into a hole ever since. The first televised golf game was the US Open in 1947. As for why people stand around and watch, I have no idea.

:) I suppose folks like to root for their favorites and there's probably a bit of wagering going on among them, too. Maybe someone here who loves to watch golf can explain the attraction to us....

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
