When did the study of archaeology begin?

Archaeology started in the 15th and 16th century in Europe together with the popularity of collecting and Humanism which is type of rational philosophy that held art in high esteem. There are elite group of Renaissance era who are inquisitive and collected antiquities from ancient Greece and Rome. They considered these collections as pieces of art.

This desire for art led to the sponsored excavations and development of Classical archaeology. The Heculaneum and Pompeii which are famous cities that were buried during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius were excavated because of Queen of Naples.

A new era of archaeology started in when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt in 1798. Napoleon wanted to understand the Egyptian people and their past. He bought with him a thank of 175 scholars.
