When focusing a camera on a mirror, why is the image out of focus, when the mirror itself is in focus?

Similar questions: focusing camera mirror image focus.

The image is twice the distance, while the mirror is not.

There are two kinds of auto-focus systems. The fancier one focuses using light-- by comparing how close a pair of light beams come back from the scene. The cheaper one uses sound-waves-- this will home in on the first sound-reflecting surface, like a window or mirror.

I'm talking about a single lens reflex. Say the mirror is 3ft away from the camera..the image on the mirror is also 3ft away(because it's on the surface of the mirror). Why aren't the 2 in focus?

It doesn't matter what kind of camera it is. The image is not "on the mirror". The image looks like it's 3 feet BEHIND the mirror, because it effectively *is*.

A camera with a sound-wave focus system will focus on the mirror. One with a light-focus system will focus on the virtual image, 6 feet away.

Oh, I see, you're asking why BOTH are not in focus at the same time. The mirror has nothing to do with tis.. you'll have the same problem focusing on objects that are 3 and 6 feet away, in a straight line. It's because most all-auto cameras use wide-open lenses, NOT ones that can be "stopped down" to like F16 or so.

A lens, because of the way it works, if used "wide open", will have a narrow range of focus. As you "stop down" the lens, making less of it pass light, the exposed lens surface has less curvature, which means that light from varying distances tends to focus better. See if your camera has the ability to "Stop down" the lens -- many don't.

If so you're stuck with its focusing range.

Gary4books "The image is twice the distance, while the mirror is not. " precisely and exactly correctin our first example if focus is set appropriate for a distance of 10 feet, then the stick person will be in focus. In the second example if the focus is set appropriate for a distance of 11 feet, then the mirrow will be in focus the stick person will not be in focusin the second example if the focus is set appropriate for a distance of 22 feet then the stick person will be in focus, the stick man will not be in focus.

A lot of auto focus cameras use sonar or something other distance measuring tool to determine the distance for the focussome may actually use sensors on the image sensor to detect sharp or fuzzy spots in the image. But this is not fool proof unless the camera somehow knows what part of the photo is supposed to be most clearAperture, sometimes referred to as f-stops, and distance affect what’s called the depth of field. Typoin the second example if the focus is set appropriate for a distance of 22 feet then the stick person will be in focus, the mirror will not be in focus.

4) Even though you don't want to hear the answer, Ancient Hacker gave it to you. The camera you have obviously is focusing on the first object it finds, which is the mirror, because it can not understand the difference between a mirror and another object. I don't know if the AF mode on your camera can be changed, but I doubt it.

The solution is to switch over to manual mode for the few times you want to take a picture of yourself using a mirror, or get a tripod and use the timer function, if your camera has one. Or, you can buy another camera that does allow the AF to use the mirror. BTW, the type of camera, aka SLR or direct view, has no bearing on the AF mechanism.

You don't understand the question. It has nothing to do with af. I'm asking WHY the 2 images don't focus at he same time?

Please don't tell me what I do or don't want to hear. And don't answer the question if you don't know the answer, or the question itself. Okelley 16 months ago .
