Depends on your oven If your oven has an automatic preheat feature (and not a separate preheat on the dial), then your top element has likely burned out. It's possible you can pull that element out and take it to a hardware store or an appliance parts store and get a replacement. Most of the time, they just plug it, like the stovetop elements do.

If your top element generally comes on when in the preheating phase, then it's gone on the fritz. That's the first thing I'd check before calling a repairman.

When the oven is on preheat both upper and lower elements should come on until the temperature comes up to what you set. After the temperature reaches what you have set it to be, both elements should go off. You are supposed to then turn the knob from "preheat" to "bake" so that only the lower element will come on after that to maintain your selected temperature without over-cooking the top of your food.

If the upper element won’t come on for preheating nor for broiling, something is wrong. You may need a new upper element. Sometimes they burn out.

Might be good to consult an appliance repairman in that case. I have replaced mine, being sure all the electricity is off first. Flipping the "Main" circuit breaker is not always an assurance of that, either, I have discovered..

Normal oven function: most electric ovens have two elements. In baking, the bottom element is used to maintain oven heat for to cook your food. In broiling, the top element provides direct radiant heat to cook your food.

Now the catch: most ovens will use BOTH elements at once to bring the oven up to temperature, when you first turn it on to bake something. Once the oven is up to temperature, the top oven turns off, and doesn't turn back on. Here's two tests to do: turn your oven to bake, and check in about one minute to see if the top element is on.

If it is, your oven has a normal automatic preheat cycle. Turn your oven to broil, and watch to see if the top element heats up. If it does not, then there is a problem.

Now the final complication is that some older stoves have a manual preheat setting - in this case, the top element will never come on when you turn the selector to bake.

Cooking is not my strong suit.... but I belive that my top element only goes on when I BROIL. I don't know if this is absolutely correct but that is when I believe my oven does. So what are you baking?

And are you sharing? Have a great day.

Oven For bake only the bottom element should light. For broil the top element should light.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
