If you plan to try to make it onto an Olympic team, most gymnastics coaches agree that the best age to start learning gymnastics is between 3 and 7 years old. Kids that young don’t really learn the harder moves. In preschool, the coaches just start teaching them how to move their bodies correctly.
They begin working on balance, flexibility and correct posture. When kids are in elementary school, they start learning the basic gymnastics moves. As they get into their tweens and teens, they start learning how to do those moves on the equipment (bars, vault, rings etc.).
From gymnastics.about.com -quote Teaching a three-year-old body awareness means she will never learn bad habits as she gets older. By then, puberty has started and the muscles, ligaments and tendons in kid’s bodies have begun to harden. However, ten is not too old to start training if all you want to do is be on your high school or college gymnastics team, where there are slightly lower standards. You can begin doing gymnastics just for fun at any age.
