When people say, I pay $500 per week for my housekeeper or nanny, is that usually before or after taxes (gross or net?)?

Often, they don't pay taxes This relation is often under the table, and taxes aren't paid at all. When taxes are paid, it's usually because they're hiring the nanny through an agency. In that case the agency pays the taxes, so the wage includes both the tax and the agency's fee.

Agencies receive closer scrutiny, and it's harder for them to get away without paying taxes. It all goes to their expenses, and so they don't pay taxes on that money themselves. $500 a week is a pretty good wage for a nanny, rather above the minimum.

Often they're hired at sub-minimum wages, so I suspect that people paying that much are usually going through an agency, so it includes the taxes.
