When visiting New York City, should you rent a car or is better to take the subway?

New York City, like all major cities in America is going to be easier to get around if you allow someone else to drive you. Chicago and New York are both well known as places that have pretty decent Mass Transit facilities that are great ways to get around the city and will help you avoid getting into a situation where you miss your turn over and over again and have to keep circling because you can’t get in the right lane. The best way to get around New York, would be to use the Subway and if you are feeling as though you can’t really figure out where each line goes and how to get from one place to another you can always hail a taxi.As a visitor, trying to drive around town with a rental car would be a nightmare.

The answer to this question is simple: it is better to take the subway in New York City than driving. The Metro system is still the best way to get around; most all the attractions are within a walk to cab ride from a subway stop. Buy an easy pass that allows for unlimited rides for a day or week and avoid fumbling for fares and standing in line at the kiosks during crunch times.

Driving is fraught with danger as you are competing for space with aggressive cab drivers, congestion never abates, and parking will cost you dearly. Also, to be plain, the quintessential New York experience involves riding the subway, so leave the car at the rental lot.

I would suggest renting a car only if you need to travel outside of the city. You are likely to spend to much energy and money trying to find a place to park the car everywhere you go. The subway is worth trying, as it is also part of the NYC experience, and it is pretty convenient.
