It's impossible. And maybe we ought to talk more about religion and politics. The problem is that I'm an atheist and a liberal. My family are Christians and conservative.

I generally try to avoid the issue because having such discussions would invariably lead to some older member of the family chiding me for being unpatriotic, ungodly and bad in every way, and other members of the family looking at me as some kind of "lost sheep", weird and astray from sanity. Asking fundamentalist Christians to not talk about religion is like asking dogs to not drool.(i.e. They'd feel so hurt and look so puppy faced that you'd relent and throw them their ball.

) However, religion always comes up when I'm with my family because: 1) My mom would ask me if I go to church. I would say no. Thus starts the lecture on what's "most important" in life.

(Nevermind the fact that Mr.Atheist here is far more well educated, well travelled and has far more friends than her... and is actually helping her pay the rent. ) 2) The family would hold hands and pray. And I would keep my eyes open and not say Amen, since I don't really believe in talking to imaginary, invisible friends.

They'd wonder why I don't feel thankful to God.(Even though I've profusely thanked the cooks and the hosts and all the people for all the good they've done for me. ) 3) They'd ask why I play secular music instead of only Christian music on the stereo.(Er... other than the fact that they sound nice?) 4) They'd criticize my choice of Christmas tree decorations - Stars are pagan, dear, you should have an angel on top of the tree! (I'm sure that's what Mary and Joseph put on their ten-foot pine.

) 5) The bible says I shouldn't be living with my girlfriend since we're not married.(And of course, only a wedding in church counts.) 6) I'd not go to church with them on Sunday and they'd keep inviting me because you know - they want to be the heroes who bring a lost brother back to Christ and cause the angels to rejoice and the Hallelujahs and Amens to ring in heaven for my salvation. Me, I just want to stay at home and maybe read a good book about the reality of this world. The bottom line - Religion and politics are unavoidable topics and understandably so.It crosscuts so much of how we live and what we believe in and how we relate to each other as human beings.

I'm a little disappointed that people actually want to avoid talking about them altogether... especially those who are actually interested or opinionated about matters of life and society. We shouldn't try to avoid talking about problems - rather we should learn to be able to hear opinions on all sides in a civil manner, and allow even "dumb" ideas to challenge us on how to defend our own (supposedly "superior") ideas, and coach ourselves on how to persuade people based on "where they're coming from". No There is no reason why any subject can not be discussed with civility. Passion can be attractive, but tact and diplomacy are better. No, we enjoy a lively debate. We don't really get mad at each other. It's fun to hear everyone's point of view..

I only wish I had family to get together with... However I don't but I have no problem to anyone who is willing to speak to me and we treat each other with some respect and love. No Jesus Christ is my ONLY WAY out of this open grave called earth and NEVER EVER do I want to exclude talking of my best friend to anyone. I have no family so I will speak of my Lord and God to you folks here.

1 YES we are Dems, Inlaws not,,,it can get painful, and when they bring it up, we try to change the subject since the debates can get heated, then hard feelings, and mass exits from the parties. I said, let's agree to talk turkey and fun and celebrate life. {or shut up, we need some positives in our house!

When you have a strong conviction or belief (religion - politics - or anything else), and you come across.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
