When you were a kid, was your halloween costume bought or homemade?

Similar questions: kid halloween costume bought homemade.

Homemade, always I don't remember ever buying anything for a Halloween costume. That just wasn't done back in the 70's; the stores had simple masks at most, not the huge racks of expensive costumes you see today. If they had had more, we couldn't have afforded it anyway, so we made a variety of costumes ourselves.

*Occasionally* we would buy an appropriate plastic mask, but the rest of the costume was always homemade. I remember being an "Indian" two different years. We would probably call them "Native American" costumes now.My dad brought home burlap feed sacks, and my mom cut armholes and wove ribbons through them.

Then we painted my face and I wore colored feathers on my head. We weren't trying to be degrading to Native Americans (I know my parents didn't think that way -- they had Native American friends), but dressing like that for Halloween would probably be considered politically incorrect, or insensitive today. Too bad -- I think it is actually good and enlightening for children to celebrate other cultures, and wearing ethnic costumes is one way that kids love to do that.

I think we should celebrate different cultures, as long as the wearing of costumes isn't associated with racial slurs, or other degrading behavior. I was the "Lone Ranger" one year.My parents bought me a plastic Lone Ranger style mask, the rest was brown pants, western style flannel shirt, and a leather belt with a cardboard gun stuck in it. I don't remember having a Lone Ranger hat.

I made the gun myself, cut it out and drew on it, then lost it somewhere on 9th street in the dark. I was disappointed. One year I went as a Vampire, and my sister was Frankenstein's monster.

I had plastic, store-bought, glow-in-the-dark teeth. The rest of the costume consisted of Wildroot to slick my hair back, and a little white shoe polish at the temples. I can't remember the clothes, but I'm sure it was some kind of black and white clothes, with maybe a cape my mom cut out for me.

My sister wore my dad's work boots, and some heavy men's clothes that might have been bought at the town thrift store. Her head was a squarish cardboard box on which she spent quite a bit of time drawing a Frankenstein face, ears, and hair. The eyehole cutouts were tiny, and she could hardly see at all -- I had to lead her around.

The last year I went, I was about 12 years old.My brother and I were into "Star Wars" at the time. He dressed as Chewbacca, and I went as a Tusken Raider. I don't really remember the Chewie costume very well -- probably just brown clothes or something, and I'm sure my brother spent some time making a Chewbacca-style bandolier out of cardboard and string, or brown ribbons.

For my Sandperson costume, I took an old sheet and ripped it into strips, then wound them all around my head. I carried a Gaffi stick I made out of cardboard, and I made cardboard eye, nose, mouth, and horn pieces to stick out of the head wrapping. I doubt kids who buy costumes will remember them as fondly as I remember our homemade ones.

I was pleased this year when my wife gave our kids the choice to buy a costume, or use the money for something else. My six year old decided to use the money for something else. But she wanted to be a cat, so she made her own costume out of black pants, an inside-out black shirt, and some pink ears that she had in her toy bins.

I helped her cut a piece of wide black A/V cable for a tail, and we used an eyebrow pencil to draw on whiskers. Now *that's* a costume. :-) Hmm.

Where the heck would you *get* a burlap feed sack these days, anyhow? 3 Homemade, always, AND sometimes based around a flannel nightgown--so multi-purpose. My own kids, now 19 and 21, ALSO had homemade halloween costumes. I used to be a theatrical costume designer, and my kids had GREAT halloween gear.

4 That's funny, I was just talking with my mom about that. My mom always made my costumes. One year I was a skunk- I won the "most original" award.

I liked it so much I wore it again the next year. Now it seems moms just don't have time to be creative and help the kid make their costume so instead they just go out and buy it, slap it on their kid, and send them out the door.
