Where did Santa Clause originate?

Saint Nicholas was originally Turkish However the Dutch version of his life got slightly corrupted, and turned into the modern Santa Claus. (Pronouncing Saint Nicholas in Dutch comes out like: San Nicolaus, which morphed into Santa Claus).
