We (my wife and I, Dutch) like to get a realistic view on the day to day American life. Best way would be spend some time with a private family in a smaller town. We care for rest, so a quiet neighbourhoud would be fine.
We intend to participate in the annual cycle event in NYC on the first sunday on May 1st, 2011. Asked by A1966 13 months ago Similar questions: start private family rents rooms tourists NY City vecinity Society > Holidays.

Yeah, I don't think we do that in New York City. I don't think you want to stay with someone taking in borders. Your best bet is to stay at a hostel or a bed & breakfast.
Tks for your fast reply, Dan. A hostel or B& B doesn't really give us a good impression of the day to day USA-life, but I'll surely keep your idea in the back of my head. Regards from Holland!

Here is a website you can check out. A "Bed and Breakfast" might be a good choice since most times the actual family live in the establisment. You would have a choice of NY city, Brooklyn and the surrounding area.
You could also find a place on Long Island but then you would have a train trip back and forth to the city which is where you really want to be. Book way in adance since that cycle event is pretty popular here. Check out the prices to see if you would be better off in a hotel.Be warned that New York is very expensive so bring plenty of bucks.
I am a New Yorker. Html.
Thanks for your reply, it's been very helpfull. We were already warned about the high prices in New York so we will bring in a suitcase full of bucks. I'm following the site of the cycle event.
I think we can book in february. We'll book on the first day, if......Our visit totally depends on the possibility to get days off of work for the both of us, and, much more difficult, to find a place to stay for our 3 kids (tree in forest?...)Regards,Adriaan A1966 13 months ago .
I hope it all works out for you. Welcome in advance to New York.
You could go to Rheinbeck, NY right across the river from Woodstock It is quaint Dutch town and quite chi-chi, as they say. I have a friend there and would be willing to check it out. It is also on the train line.
Tks fr your reply. Rheinbeck (is the spelling right? I couldn't find it on Google) might work, that depends on the travelling time to NY city by train.
How long is that? What is ci-chi? Regards from a cold, cold Netherlands A1966 12 months ago .
Rheinbeck is a quaint little town and quite wealthy, Chi-chi is a stupid term which means "popular, artsy", etc. It would probably be about a 30 minute or less ride. I will see what else I can fi nd.

Go to upstate NY - take the train to Albany (about 90 minutes north). It's an entirely different world up there. Farmland, but home of a fine university, and close to many historical areas.
Finding a B&B or family will be easy.
Tks fr your suggestion. I will certainly keep this one in mind, although 90 minutes by train is rather a lot. Tks again and regards,Adriaan A1966 12 months ago .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
