I think you're right. Actually it's a little more than that. From after WWII to the mid 1970s, partisanship was declining in US politics.
We always had two parties, but during this time more and more people were registering independent, 'voting for the man, not the party' Partisanship came back in the late 70s, during the term of Jimmy Carter. And it was the Republicans who brought it back, because they saw it favored them. The Republicans are now and have always been the minority party in terms of voter registrations nationwide There have always been fewer people in the US registered as Republican than as Democratic in the US, since the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln.
The way a minority party wins and takes control is to get their 'base' excited and angry and get them to the polls in bigger numbers. And in a country where traditionally only 40-50% of people show up at the polls for most elections, this is not hard to do. Look at any series of elections and what you see is that the lower the voter turnout, the better the Republicans do.
In order to get their voters angry and motivated, Republicans really lay on the rhetoric. They have really destroyed the level of political discourse in the US. For instance, in 2008 when Obama ran, they tried just as hard as they could to make his color a major issue.
They couldn't just say ' you don't want to vote for a colored guy, do you?' Instead they accused him of being Muslim, of attending a madrassa, of 'palling around with terrorists', and even of belonging to an angry anti-American black church. And even still, now that the whole idea has been totally discredited, even now they're still whining about Obama's birth certificate and claiming he was born overseas. This is just SO much easier than actually disagreeing with Obama's agenda or ideas.
They know that if anything positive comes from bipartisan cooperation the president gets most of the credit. So they have simply taken bipartisanship off the table. They react in predictable fake outrage at EVERYTHING Obama says or does or wants.
Even their own ideas, like the individual mandate for health care, if Obama promotes the idea, they suddenly decide it's -socialism-. In fact they will filibuster their own bills if Obama says he likes them, just so he can't claim a little credit when he signs them. Defeating Obama, making him fail, is more important to them than whatever it was they wanted govt.
To do. Because they want to get back into power more than whatever else it was they wanted. Karl Rove had a plan for the party to take over, to turn our country into a one-party system.
He didn't even try to keep it secret, they all talked about it openly, a 'Permanent Republican Majority'. In a one party system, you don't really have democracy. People come to the polls and there's one guy to vote for!
And he is not picked by the voters, he's picked by some party committee. That was what the Republicans wanted. It was right on track until the economy collapsed in 2006.
OK well fist off while bush was still in office the GOP had a hearing on whether or not McCain could run for president since he was born on a military base to US citizens in the Panama canal. So I don't see any contradiction on the questioning of obamas eligibility for president. Is he Muslim?
That rumor was actually started by democrats.........yes H. Clinton started that rumor during the 08 primaries so please don't blame the GOP for things your own party did. What about Bengazi?
What about all the libs who still hold bush directly responsible for 9/11? Saying that bush had warning from the CIA?.....and what was this warning?......a memo saying that sometime, somewhere, something MIGHT happen. So please.
Face value as to why we should invade Iraq? No they didn't just take it on face value. Both democrats, and republicans in congress voted (including a yes vote from H.
Clinton) to invade Iraq based on intelligence gathered from the US, Russia, and Britain. Did we find WMD's......nope..........did we remove a genocidal dictator from power?......yes. I think what you are seeing is some backlash from the way the left acted towards bush.
Basically left wingers lowered the bar on standards for respecting the office of the POTUS. Now that the left has lowered the bar they are simply enjoying the fruits of their labor. Now why do I dislike obama?
He raised several of my taxes, made it a punishable offense to not insure my body (coming from the "keep your laws off my body" crowed). He hasn't taken responsibility for ANYTHING like he PROMISED he would during the 08 campaign. I felt he ran, and won his 08 campaign by making a bunch promises he never intended, and knew he couldn't keep.
And by running such a campaign I feel he prayed upon the stupidity of some, and desperation of others.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
