Decent comparison at this site. Which big lenses/small sensor digital SLR to buy? Canon is the strongest competitor in the digital SLR market.
Their current (2006) big lenses/small sensor options include the following cameras: * Canon EOS 30D ($1400; 700g; introduced May 2006; amazon) * Canon EOS 20D ($1050; 685g; introduced late 2004; same sensor, image processor, and image quality as the 30D; buy at amazon) * Canon Digital Rebel XTi ($800; 485g; called "Canon EOS 400D" outside the U.S.; introduced fall 2006; buy at amazon) These bodies are very similar in performance with sensors that are about the same size and 8-megapixels in resolution. The 30D offers better performance in low light, more responsive operation, and a rear control wheel that makes for faster operation in manual or limited-automation modes. The Digital Rebel is lighter and less bulky.
If you have a substantial investment in Nikon-mount lenses you might wish to stick with the Nikon system when buying a digital SLR. At many points in time Canon makes slightly more advanced bodies, but in virtually every photographic situation you'd end up taking the same picture with either the Canon or Nikon big lenses/small sensor body. Nikon's current (2006) options include the following: * Nikon D50 ($550; 540g; introduced mid-2005; buy at amazon) * Nikon D80 ($1000; 600g; introduced fall 2006; buy at amazon) * Nikon D200 ($1700; introduced in March 2006; buy at amazon) * Nikon D2x ($4500; 1070g; introduced early 2005; buy at amazon) All of Nikon's digital SLR cameras use the same size 16x24mm sensor, which multiplies lens magnification by 1.5.The D2x is the heavy professional 12-megapixel model.
The D200 is the advanced amateur 10-megapixel model. The D80 is the mid-range 10-megapixel model, much lighter in weight due to its plastic body. The D50 is a scaled-down D70s that uses SD cards instead of CF, has only one control dial, and no depth-of-field preview button.
Before you consider buying anything other than Canon or Nikon remember that a 300/2.8 telephoto lens, the standard tool of sports and wildlife photographers, will cost around $4500 to buy and $50 to rent for a weekend. You can rent lenses for Canon and Nikon, or a backup body, in any larger city. Sources: http://philip.greenspun.com/photography/building-a-digital-slr-system .
Try Both and see Really when you purchase a SLR you really are buying into a system. More then likely you will want to purchase other gear that is for that brand such as lenses or a flash. These items will cost more then the camera will in the long run.
Both cameras are very capable and it will depend on which one you just like the feel of. Some people complain the XTi is too light or is too small for their hands. I think any DSLR would work for your needs if you are trying one for the first time.
I wouldn't put too much emphasis on Megapixels as once you are above 5 you should be fine for most sizes you will print. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
