Shooting with 75-300mm SLR lens on Canon Digital Rebel XTi, kept getting Err99 msg, Why?

I turned off the camera as recommeded, but finally had to change to my 28-80mm lens which also is an SLR not a DSLR. Unfortunately I needed the telephoto lens, so I had to get up close and personal with my subjects. Will I be able to use my 75-300mm lens on this digital camera?

Well... It could be dirty contacts on the lens. However I am guessing, like I asked in my clarifiaction question, that its an aftermarket lens, most likely a sigma, maybe tokina. And that the problem then would be from the lens maker, not making the lenses to FULL specs from Canon.

Sigma is well known for doing this! If it is a Sigma lens, your S.O.L. Sell the lens and get a Canon lens. Also remember that a 300mm lens on your film camera will be about the as a 480 when you put it on the Dslr, when fully zoomed in.

Also try using it on AV mode, and set it to 5.6, that should allow it to work, however your exposure might be a tad off, also not uncommon with sigma lenses. I would suggest getting a newer lens. Not sure what you are shooting.

I would have to assume its not people, unless its sports, and then a SLOW lens like those wide zooms are not affective anyways. As the zoom feature will tend to flatten the look of the image and remove depth! Take a look at the new Tamron SP (pro line) 70-200 F2.8 lens.

I tested one a few weeks back, and its not as nice as my canon 70-200 F2.8 IS is, but for the $$$ its an awesome lens. Another to look at is the Canon 70-200 F4 IS. But the new Tamron is very nice and was pretty crisp.

I would give it a 4-4.5 star out of 5 rating. Esp when you take the price into consideration. If you need even more reach, go with the Canon 100-400 IS, but its again back to 5.6 so it will be a tad slower than the F4 or even the 2.8.... Hope this helps.

Try cleaning the electrical contacts on the lens using a pencil eraser This solves some of the issues with Err99 and since you can use the 28-80, this indicates to me that the lens is the problem. If you're still having problems, have a look here: richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/04/29/50... Good luck Sam .

Lens/body error Err99 indicates the lens and body are not talking to each other. It is *very* common. If you are certain everything is in order, follow the link to read a long in-depth thread with a vast number of possible fixes.

DSLR Error 99 fixApr 29th, 2005 by RichardPlease do not post a comment in this thread unless you have read this post fully including the updates and tried the various fixes listed. When you do post, please tell us the type of camera you have, the lens on at the time, whether you tried other lenses, etc. Read this before you post. Thank you.50mm lens contact pointsRecently I started getting occasional errors when taking pictures with my Canon Digital Rebel (300D): error 99.

I’d have to “reboot” the camera by turning it off and then back on to get out of the error mode and in the process I’d lose the last picture I took that produced the error dialog. I searched around on the web in various Canon discussions and could not find anything definitive on this error. Some folks seemed to think it was a battery issue, some a card issue, some a lens compatibility issue.

I was feeling pretty bummed out that my year old camera was showing signs of giving out. Then I called Canon Tech Support (should have done that first). Canon Digital Rebel bodyThe guy at tech support listened and then told me that the lens contacts were dirty and to get a pencil with an eraser on the end, just a regular old pencil with a red rubber eraser.

Detach the lens from the camera, hold it so that the lens’ gold contacts are pointing down and lightly erase their exposed surface, cleaning them of any hand oil that might have gotten on them. Do the same thing with the gold contacts inside the camera body. This is a bit harder but it’s doable: just hold camera so lens opening points down so no gunk falls in.

Erase lightly. I used a lens cloth and dabbed at the contacts rather than blow them so as not to blow the erasings inside the camera. I did this to each of my three lenses just to be sure.

Lo and behold, it worked (so far anyway). I’ve shot numerous pictures with each lens and have not gotten a single error 99 message. One would think sites like dpreview.

Com would have this but I never found it there. I’m psyched, I feel like I have a whole new camera now. UpdateIf you are just discovering this thread and plan to post a comment about your error 99 experience I’d appreciate if you could post:1.

Update #2One of our participants in the long comment thread below (Tom) got this in a message from Canon URL2 may help some of you isolate the problem before you post a comment/question. To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:1. Turn off the camera.2.

Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.5.

Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. Does the “ERR 99? Message appear?

If it does, then the camera should beserviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:1. Turn off the camera.2.

Insert the CF card.3. Turn on the camera.4. Format the CF card in the camera.5.

Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture. Does the “ERR 99? Message appear?

If so, then the CF card is the mostlikely source of the issue. Try using a different card. If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:1.

Turn off the camera.2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraseror soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into thecamera body.3.

Reattach your lens.4. Turn on the camera.5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99? Message only appears when one particular lens isattached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician. If you see the “ERR 99?

With a different Canon lens attached, then thecamera should be serviced. Sources: http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/04/29/50mm-lens-contact-points/ .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
