President Richard Nixon nominated Harry Blackmun to replace Justice Abe Fortas, who had resigned from the Court due to a conflict of interest. Blackmun's nomination followed on the heels of two prior candidates who were rejected by the Senate. Justice Blackmun was confirmed by a vote of 94-0 on June 9, 1970.
