Rockets capable of launching people and equipment into space were developed by the US and USSR with scientists and technology captured from Germany in World War 2. Both countries were trying to outdo each other for political and military reasons, and the USSR had the initial successes with the first artificial satellite and the first man in space. Rockets were invented centuries earlier, but it took the resources of the superpowers in competition to create space rockets.
