It's all about Beethoven. Beethoven is, for me, the epitome of human expression. I love Bach and Haydn, but it’s all about Beethoven.
He was a futurist; he realized that he could not emotionally suppress his music. He was able to metamorphose his themes like no other composer in history. He didn’t ’break the rules’ as so many people like to say.
That’s an inaccurate declaration. What he did do was expand musical/emotional vocabulary for everyone that followed him. S piano music was written for the piano even before a more modern piano-forte was really developed, almost as if he could see the future.
Using Haydn’s model and years of practice he perfected the string quartet. He mastered the Symphony. He didn’t let time limits be his guide for completing his music.
He would sketch and sketch and sketch ’til his heart was content. S art was what kept him alive. He did everything he could to overcome his hearing problems (the misconception is that he was completely deaf during his entire career, but he actually had good and bad days and didn’t go completely deaf until later in his life - 1814 or so?) he didn’t let that stop him.
The one thing he needed as a musician he lacked, but even that couldn’t stop him. He tapped into just about every musical medium: Songs, Opera, Symphony, Chamber (Piano Trios, String Quartets, Wind Ensemble, Violin/Cello sonatas, etc), Oratorio, Solo Piano, Concerti, et cetera. He even transcribed some of his music for other instrumentation (Violin Concerto for Piano, Piano Sonata No.
9, Op.14 transcribed for String Quartet H.34, etc). It just seems like I identify very strongly with Beethoven's works like no other composer. I may not be in the mood for Bruckner, Wagner, Debussy or Messaien, but I seem to just about always be interested in Beethoven.

Because no matter what criteria you want to use to assess a composer, Bach excels all others. Sheer volume of output? I have read more than once that simply to copy all the music Bach composed, it would take a person working a 40 hour week more than seventy years to complete the task.
And yet the volume only scratches the surface of his accomplishment. S work spans the entire range from solo instrument, instructional collections, large scale choral and orchestral works, trios and quartets. He wrote for them all.
Far beyond flexibility, the inner logic, voice leading, harmonic sense, use of dissonance, and the aesthetic beauty of the order of so much of his work is staggering. Bach's work is the acme and epitome of the heart and mind working together on fire. The riches and profundity of his Cantatas, the amazing mastery in his Art of Fugue, the majesty and pathos in his Tocattas and Fugues, the impact of his Well Tempered Clavier on the entirety of both classical and popular music - all of this, very easily and hands down, make Bach not only my favorite composer (classical or otherwise), but also the most important musician the Western world has ever known.
Hope that helps. Best to you..
Mendelsohn... Die Moldau... Midsummer's nights dream. I like his lightness and playfulness...
My head says Bach My heart says Mozart. Both are enormous world-historical talents and I can listen to both over and over, never tiring of them. Bach is more cerebral and Mozart more emotional.
I love them both.
