What was used was not poison gas, it was actually a group of powerful herbicides collectively known as the "Rainbow Herbicides" due to the different stripes found on the barrels, they were sprayed by the Americans under Operation Ranch-Hand, which was a plan to destroy foliage which was thought to have been covering the Viet Cong that were hiding there, the most famous being Agent Orange, all of these herbicides contained dioxin bar one which was Agent White, that one had carcinogens Hope that helps.
