Mp3=format; iPod=player MP3 is an audio encoding standard, technically MPEG-1, Layer 3; and as you are aware, an iPod is a physical entity, composed of hardware/software/firmware that is equipped to (a) decode files encoded in this format and (b) produce audio from those resources. Some vendors choose to call their devices "MP3 players" to emphasize the fact that their devices are compatible with this format. There are numerous encoding formats; Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is Apple’s "standard" codec for the iPod, which is why you will see an iPod listed as an AAC/MP3 player: it plays either/both... When you say "record talk, interviews" I am not sure exactly what you mean; if you mean download pre-recorded stuff from, say, NPR, and then listen to it on you player, that is no problem whatsoever; I have purchased audio books and listened to them on my iPod without a hitch... I only really know about Apple iPods (I own dozens of them because I refurbish them), and the computer software "iTunes" (freely available) can guide you on how to set up your iPod so that you can access the pre-recorded material you are looking for... If you do not now own an MP3 player, you can check with others here or elsewhere on what might be the most cost effective purchase--iPods tend to be a bit pricey, but then Apple products always have been... In terms of capacity, you may want to investigate the storage requirements for the average book you intend to listen to and then fudge it up a gig or two (i think 4GB is plenty for audio-books, maybe even 2GB, but if you intend to add music, and why wouldn’t you, that can start seriously eating into the Gigabytes)... I should also mention that an Apple refurb 2GB (with 1 yr.

Warranty) is available from Apple for about $99 at their site; just google "apple refurbished ipod" and you’ll find it. Mp3 is an audio file format...an iPod is a player mp3 is actually a compression algorithm that takes an audio file and discards a lot of extraneous information, resulting in a file perhaps only 1/10th of the original size while still retaining a high degree of audio fidelity. This smaller new file is called an mp3. There are other kinds of compression algorithms that produce other kinds of files, too.

The whole idea is to reduce the file size so that you can fit more songs in less memory. IPods can play mp3s and other audio file types. Other non-Apple players can play mp3s and maybe other file formats too, depending on the individual unit.

For the second part of your question, we need some clarification. If you want to record the material yourself, for example if you wanted to read a chapter of a book into a microphone and convert that into a file you can listen to, that’s pretty easy. Your computer probably has a microphone input jack (check near the headphones output jack).

So first step is to buy a microphone that will plug in here. Second, you need a program that will record and digitize your voice, using the microphone as input. A great free program that will do this is Audacity.

Google it. Audacity will let you record as much material as your hard disk has room for. Disclaimer: the max I’ve recorded has been ~15 minutes in one go.

The longer you go the larger the files become and depending on the power of your computer, it may not be able to handle such large files. You'll have to experiment to see what size files your computer can handle. When you’re finished recording you can save your file as an mp3 and Audacity will apply the mp3 algorithm and shrink your huge file down to a manageable size.

Then it’s just a matter of loading the resulting mp3 onto an iPod or other portable mp3 player. If your interviews, books, etc. Already exist in some electronic file format you may be lucky enough that they are already mp3s. If not, numerous utilities can be found on the internet to convert from one format to another...in your case, from whatever format you have to mp3.

Some basics Okay. Here goes . .. MP3 is a compression format for audio.

IPod is a hardware device from Apple that plays back audio/video files (and does more). The iPod plays back mp3 files, AAC files and some other audio and video formats. These are all standard formats. It does not play back Windows Media files as they are copy protected formats and are not iPod compatible.

The iPod does not record audio on its own, but you can add a device to allow it to do this very easily. The iPod does play audiobooks - in fact it has the ability slow down or speed up the playback for you in case you want that. You can buy audiobooks through the iTunes store.

You can create your own audiobooks if you have any on CD and want to import them into your iPod. You have a lot of options available. Good luck!

MP3 is better for your needs Well firstly iPod is overrated, the only reason it is popular is because it is an Apple brand, it got maximum advertising, and it looks good. But if you go deeper than that, the software used with iPod i.e. ITunes is absolutely horrible from all standpoints. It leaves a LOT to be desired.

Even though they have been working on it for over 3 yrs now, iTunes still has many unresolved glitches, it takes up to much CPU space while working, it often crashes computers and is often slow. I would definitely suggest an mp3 player. There are many mp3's out there that are BETTER, and CHEAPER than the iPod.

For example, I use Creative Zen Micro, it allows me access to radio (which no iPod does), it allows me to use it as a jump drive if needed, so I can save various files on it etc. ALSO, it lets me record my voice (which you mentioned). Going back to the radio feature for a bit, if you are listening to something on the radio and you really like it, you can click the record button and it will record it for however long you want it too. So for example if you are listening to your favorite political show, and they are talking about important issues and you want to save it for later hearing, you can do that....its dvr for radio!

All these features are perfect for my needs. The software for this mp3 is Creative Media Source, which again is MUCH better than iTunes. As for recording books, I listen to books on the go too, you can just drag and drop them into your mp3 when its connected to your computer, its simple and the files aren't protected like iTune files often are.

I would encourage you to visit www.creative.com to choose the mp3 that suits you and to look up other major mp3 players too. Happy hunting and feel free to ask if you have any more questions regarding what I just said :) Sources: my experience PnL's Recommendations Creative Zen Micro Photo 8 GB MP3 Player Dark Blue Amazon List Price: $249.99 Average Customer Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (based on 207 reviews) Creative Zen Micro Photo 4 GB MP3 Player Black Amazon List Price: $358.88 Used from: $143.92 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 81 reviews) I love my zen :) .

1 neoclassicist, regarding your answer "mp3 is an audio file format...an iPod is a player": I think I will have to "jump in" and try it. Your answer provides a strong foundation and will help aleviate some of the techno-fear I have. Thanks!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
