Why buy Sterling Silver Jewelry?

Sterling silver is really pretty! Beautiful jewelry has been made from silver. So many artists work in silver that there's bound to be something out there for everyone. It has a special lustre, a kind of glow, that other base metals just don't have - it's like looking at the moon, if that doesn't sound too weird.

Silver is also a fairly inexpensive choice for a metal of value. I mean, you can pick white gold, but that's going to cost you an arm and a leg nowadays. So will platinum. However, silver jewelry can be purchased reasonably, and you still feel beautiful in it - it doesn't feel like you bought it from a 25-cent vending machine at the grocery store, next to the bubblegum.

So, with all these beautiful choices, and the relatively nice price, what's not to love? And just like anything that's worth having, it's worth putting a little work into. (I mean, it's like having a car.

A car is really useful, yeah, but you still have to do all these things to keep it running - putting gas into it, regular oil changes, scheduled maintenance, washing it. Yet people still find that the benefits outweigh the trouble. ) Most of my silver jewelry doesn't need to be cleaned all that often.

Perhaps once a year for five minutes, if I wear it regularly, because wearing the piece actually helps prevent tarnish buildup - and what does appear is in the recessed bits, giving it a lovely patina and depth. Pieces I don't wear as often will tarnish more, but since I don't use them as often, I don't clean them as often, either. It's a kind of tradeoff.

Silver has one more big benefit - did you know it could save your life? Say you put on a silver necklace or ring and then got on a plane that crashed in the wilderness, or you were hit by a hurricane that knocked out the water system. However, if you found some water and soaked your jewelry in it, the silver would kill bacteria and make it safe to drink!

It's true. I learned it in a survival skills class - and NASA uses silver this way on the Space Shuttle, too. All in all, I think silver is a great choice for jewelry - to me, that five minutes of easy work each year is worth the beauty of wearing jewelry with a special glow.

If so, I can try to answer this. I have made jewelry from fine silver, which is basically pure unalloyed silver. I like it for some applications, because it has a different texture and feel than sterling.

It's hard to describe (softer, silky, satiny? ) but I just like it a lot. While it is true that jewelry made from fine silver tarnishes much less than sterling, the price you pay is that it is much softer.

This is ok for a broach or an earring, but for something like a finger ring it just does not work out well. It dings up so badly that it's appearance dulls noticeably in just a few days. Sterling silver it much harder and scratches much less.

So even though it tarnishes, it will last a lot longer before it needs attention. For some pieces I like fine silver, but for anything that will be banged around (rings, necklace, bangles etc) sterling works better..

Really good sterling doesn't tarnish if you take care of it. There are boxes and material I wrap my sterling in to prevent this. It all depends on how you care for it.

I would rather own platinum but the high price keeps me from buying alot of it. Silver goes better with some colors than gold. I wear alot of pink and I just think silver looks better with that color.

Versus if I wear red, I prefer gold. I used to never wear gold, but now I own alot, but all in all I'd rather wear silver and own tons of it. Jewelry keeper anti tarnish anti tarnish sterling strips anti tarnish safe keeper box .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
