The swallowing reflex causes the epiglottis to close over the glottis, the opening to the trachea and the respiratory tract. The glottis must be open in order to laugh, speak, or breathe. As such, it is easy to see that one cannot both swallow and breathe, speak, or laugh simultaneously.
Were it not for the epiglottis closing off the glottis during swallowing, food or fluids would go into the trachea and lungs.
Your body will prevent the food from going into the tube (pharynx) that is shared by both the respiratory tract and the digestive tract. It is more important to keep food out of the lungs. If the food does get that far, you will really cough a lot.
