A12. Congress amended section 1814(a)(2) of the Social Security Act in 1989. The Social Security Act specifies that NPs and CNSs who are not employed by the facility may certify (and recertify) that the services the beneficiary requires may only be performed in the SNF.
They did not extend this benefit to PAs. Therefore, by statute, PAs may not sign SNF certifications/re-certifications. More.
