Over time, not straight away. The first thing I did was exclude products which were tested on animals, I stopped buying new leather etc but I still had leather workboots. I ended up giving those to my dad about 9 or 10 years ago.
I had wool jumpers which I gave away in 2001, but they didn't fit anymore anyway. I still have some ornaments I was given as gifts in the early 90s which are made from bone. The main thing is to cease supporting cruelty by not buying new things which contain the by-products of slaughter.
I've always been sort of anti-consumption and have never had a big collection of shoes or makeup. Any leather shoes I did have were usually worn to death and eventually I just chose non-leather ones. I have a couple of inherited groovy 50s and 60s leather bags and silk scarves - I don't use them now, but they're still packed away in my wardrobe.
Ditto a few inherited ivory brooches. I have two old woollen jumpers that I would probably still wear, but haven't for a number of years. Now days, I not only avoid leather but try not to buy too many man-made fibres in shoes or clothes, so just about all my stuff is cotton.
I don't wear fancy high heels or makeup. I use a basic moisturiser. I make my own handbags, purses etc from fabric offcuts I come across in my travels.
Life is best when it's simple, anything extra is just ephemeral fluff that I don't need.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
