The big question lingering after all the answers so far is: Why are there no ideological conflicts among atheists but almost identical ideological conflicts between religious adherents. Oh, yeah. It's that Atheist double standard rearing its head again.
Can they act any more like cultists? One of the defining characteristics of the fanatic of any stripe is his opportunistic defining of words. In this case, when subjected to intellectual criticism atheism is "just a lack of belief" with no reflection on real world manifestations of "just a lack of belief".
My dear, there are often feuds and vendettas and disagreements between prominent people in the same field. Take it from an academic who's seen dozens of them. It has nothing to do with religion.
It's a matter of competition and rivalry and jealousy. You can find prominent Christians sniping at each other, too. It's been going on for centuries.
Way back in the first centuries of the Early Christian church, there were figures who hated each other and fought against each other's views. The fact that you do not know this indicates that you simply are not familiar with the world of intellectual/theological endeavor.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
