All sorts of reasons I think it happens for a number of reasons. Personal experience - I could look up good soap to use on dry skin but I’d rather hear about the experiences of people who used a particular brand. I could page through a bunch of sites until I found one that told me that or I could ask the question on Askville.
Even if what I’m looking for is fact rather than experience, people will often synthesize the information from several sites into one answer or add an interesting tidbit, something Google does not do. I think the personal experience part is the reason most questions are asked here, anyway. Coins - Ask a readily answered question, get and rate 5 answers, and you’ve earned a quick and easy 6 coins.
I don’t think this accounts for too many of that type of question, really. It might in the future, though, if coins turn out to be useful in some way. Just for fun - Or attention.
:) It’s fun to get answers or start a discussion Trying out - People are new to the site and are wondering how, or if, it works. I think that’s also the reason for many questions about the meaning of life and the production capacity of woodchucks. Frustration - The asker has tried to find the answer himself and hasn’t been successful.
That’s happened to me and I’m pretty good at searching. Inability - There are some people who just can’t construct a good search query. It works better for them if they can explain in plain English what they want to know.
Then someone can turn that into a query that produces relevant results. Time management - Sometimes it’s easier, faster, or just nice to have someone else do it for you. Sources: Observation and experience .
Google is nice... ...but its nicer communicating with people. A site like this creates a community, whereas Google just gives you information. : ) .
Questions People ask questions here for various reasons. Sometimes it's just out of laziness. Some just want to test the system--the old "how does this work" and ask whatever the first question is that pops into their head.
Some might not know how to really search on Google. They can't come up with what would be a good search term to find just what they need to know. What to you or I might be considered "easily searched" on Google, might not be to the person wanting to know.
We have no idea what factors contribute to the persons decision to ask here instead of Googling the question, and want all to feel welcome to ask whatever question they need an answer to. Even spelling can figure into the equation--we have seen some questions that make very little sense until we ask other questions to find out exactly what the person is wanting to know. Google doesn't ask clarification questions!
It's nice to be patient with those who might not be able to find their answers as easily someone else might be able to. Or, if it bothers you, it's simple to just ignore it and soon the question will have scrolled on to the next page... *Poppet*'s Recommendations I Love googles Mug .
Thinking same thing This really isn't an answer, I just wanted you to know yesterday while I was reading questions the same thing popped into my head. Maybe they already googled and know the answer, just looking for points. Just a thought..
Beats me It's easier and quicker to type a few words into google.com than it is to post a question here. I dunno. Maybe they have, didn't search quite right, and got no answers?
I have google's toolbar, so it's super easy to google for me. I highly recommend it for all.
