Why do people on the "Left" often say when interviewed, "I don't know what's on the 'left' and what's 'right' anymore?

Fred Kaplan, author of "Day Dream Believers" was interviewed on the radio earlier today, and when asked about an issue that is important to the "Left Wing of the Democratic Party" that was his response. You can hear it if you listen to the interview at this link: krla870.townhall.com/MediaPlayer/AudioPl... interviewer said that he never hears "people on the right" saying they don't know what's 'on the right' these days. The interviewer asked later for people to try to explain this if they could.

Can you? It is not important to the answer here if you believe Fred Kaplan is "on the left", or not. Even if you know it one way or the other for a fact.

It's about tradition. (Disclaimer: I lean to the left. )At least in America, being conservative, or rightist, has a certain element of tradition to it.

You're preserving family values, or religion, or whatnot. So you also have values that are seen as "traditional" to the Republican party. It's important to be seen as upholding them.

Just look at what happened to Rudy Giuliani (well, before the personal stuff) or Mitt Romney. If you're perceived as not knowing or upholding what's on the right, you're going to face criticism and be called a 'closet liberal' (see: McCain)That's my 2 cents, anyway. Sources: This is my opinion.

2 I have no doubt that the confusion is caused by the mostly conservative professional mouths on talk radio. Listening to those bozos for any amount of time would confuse any poor liberal mind. Don't get me wrong.

I like the conservative message but not the conservative messengers. Too many of the conservative talk show hosts--led by the bulbous blabbermouth Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity (Limbaugh Lite), Michael Savage (Mad Mikie), and Garbage Mount Lee Rodgers--have worn me out. I could--and do--say that they don't speak for me, but the sad fact is that, by default, they do.

3 Actually, I think it's because "right" doesn't mean what it used to. A so-called conservative in the white house right now is spending money like crazy and generally trying to make the government more intrusive in every day life. Besides, factor in that it's predominantly the well off that are progressives and therefore vote against their best economic interests, as do those who are less well off an vote republican due to the social conservative agenda.

I am in first year in university now and I have three months left but I feel like my course-politics is a waste of time.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
