Very quick and easy to answer this one. "Black" refers to the start of profit time for retail outlets, as opposed to "Being in the Red" or not making a profit for the rest of the year, again for retail outlets. This day has come to symbolize the beginning of the Christmas Shopping season.
All the stores and all the on-line retail outlets, Amazon, Ebay, etc,etc, bust out all the really special deals, sales prices, and the shopping public goes crazy, going to stores at 2am, 3am, some stores allow people to "camp out" the few days before the sales begin. It has gotten totally out of control, but it is or has become an icon kicking off the Christmas Holiday Season. "Only In America".
