Why do people think that Askville = Amazon Customer Support?

Amazon ad is misleading! I've noticed an influx of customer service relation questions. It is probably, thanks to Amazon.

I was searching for a DVD and at the bottom of the page was THIS: Have a shopping question? Try askville. It's free!

Get answers from real people in areas like health, books, parenting, relationships Sources: amazon. Com .

Because you can "discover" askville through the Amazon support web pages. Although I got an email invitation to Askville long before I used it, my first visit was when I was trying to get Amazon Unbox to work. I was casting about on the Amazon site trying to get to customer support, when I found Askville.

Today I cannot reproduce the circuitous route I took to get here. I assumed Askville might have someone else on it that was having similar problems, so I asked a question. It was horribly asked, as I had no clue how to use Askville.

When I discovered the answer on my own, I tried to answer the question so that others would have the answer, but found I couldn't. However, I started to discover the great resource that askville is. There were a lot of good questions (and some poor ones, like mine, some stupid ones, and some way beyond my ken) from folks that need or want answers.

I decided it was part of my community responsibility to answer some of them. Along the way, I found that it is good practice at communication, and you get feedback from good folks, a pretty good deal. So I think we ought to welcome new folks, however they get here, so long as they are asking real questions.

I don't want to answer the same questions over and over, nor do I want to be Amazon's unpaid support or sales staff. However, I do appreciate what Amazon is doing, and I hope it works for them, and I really want good folks to get good use our of good products. I also appreciate the competition. It encourages us to be better at our efforts, and helps the folks asking the questions.

It would be great if there were better ways of searching for answers than just reviewing old question summaries. After all, there are a lot of great answers to not very well asked questions. And if there were, Amazon might find that folks can get more product pre-sales support--and thus more sales to happier customers.

I was thinking that they could award points to folks who indexed answers when they read them--much like the product classification that Amazon does on its product pages.

1 I've always seen that here, but much more lately, you're right. I was wondering, like you, how these people learned that Askville even exists? Maybe we could 'answer' a few of them with that query, and see what they say--?
