We have 4 small dogs and out of the blue they will wake up and choke and gag like they can't breathe. If they are excited they do this as well. It's hard to describe but it sounds like a snort and choking and gasping for air for about 5 minutes and I have to massage the neck area to calm them. Does anyone know what I'm referring to and why this happens?

Collapsed Trachea My chihuahua had that problem. He would cough to try to force wind into his trachea. My vet said that there was a surgery that could be done to reconstruct the trachea, but it is risky. It's basically a piece of PVC piping that goes into the dog's throat to keep the trachea in place.
It's been known to dislodge and slip. Sources: my experience..
First stop: Vet My advise is to visit the vet with your dog(s) to have 'em checked. A dog that has trouble breathing when excited doesn't need to be a problem, but it shouldn't go on for five minutes. If you have a Chihuahua, that breed is prone to snort a bit more than usual, as they have tiny little trachea's.
I have a large dog (Dalmatian) that can have the same after being too excited, but usually not more than half a minute or so. Five minutes or more doesn't sound good, and I would therefore advise you to have the vet check them. Even if there is nothing wrong with your dogs, it is better to be re-assured by your vet.

Check with your vet -- sounds like collapsing trachea Collapsing trachea is a relatively common disorder among toy breeds. Your Vet can tell you for sure -- given how often it happens, it may be as simple as manipulating the trachea manually. Otherwise, diagnosis requires endoscopy.
If it is very severe, there is a surgery that may provide some relief, but it is expensive and is usually considered a "last resort. " Here's a summary: toybreeds.com/health.htm .
My dogs did that too! Whenever they would get excited, they would do exactly that. I mentioned it to my vet, and it didn't cause him any concern.
Maybe it has something to do with their breathing, like they breathe harder and faster when excited, and their body is trying to catch up with itself. You're right, when they calm down, it totally goes away, so I don't think it's a health issue. Sources: experience .
1 Mithrandir, regarding your answer "First stop: Vet":Thank you for your advice, we have 4 japanese chins weighing from 3 lbs. Up to 10 lbs. And they all seem to do this for no apparent reason but overall act fine.
They all were at the vet for shots, heart worm testing and check-ups just more than a month ago but just started to do this snorting, choking thing. It seems when I massage the neck/throat area they calm down like its spasms. I will take them back to the vet to see what's going on.
Thanks again :o) .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
