We have 4 toy breed dogs but one is very picky/finicky and does not eat much and you can feel her ribs. Under all her hair she is a little bag a bones and I'm very concerned. She weighs 5lbs and is 4 yrs.
Old. We either use Eukanuba or Science diet small pellet food...I even moisten it. I don't give canned food because it gives her diarrhea.
Our vet did not seem concerned as long as she is eatting some food and drinking. He did many tests and blood work and x-rays which were all normal. She is not gaining weight at all and feeling her ribs makes me feel as though she is not getting the nutrients needed to gain the weight.
Overall she looks healthy but is very light and frail. Are there any safe foods/diets or a toy breed formula that won't give diarrhea that I can offer her? Asked by WILD 59 months ago Similar questions: safe healthy diet Toy Breed dogs help gain weight Pets > Dogs.

I use I have had great success with purina pro plan, my bichon/toy poodle-poochon loves it.
Toy dogs have notoriously bad teeth and that can make them not want to eat. I imagine he would have thought of that but it doesn't hurt to make sure. There are a couple things you can do to help her.
I used to work as a groomer for a puppy mill and they often had trouble with the dogs eating. Each dog was fed separately with a spoonful of meat baby food on top of their food. Turkey is a good one, it's pretty gentle on the system.
It's got plenty of vitamins too. There is a calorie supplement you can give them too.It is beef flavored and most dogs will lick it off your finger. It's just concentrated calories.
I also had a Doberman a long time ago who wouldn't eat. I ended up cooking chicken for her and mixing it with her food. It worked great but you have to introduce it slowly, just giving the dog a bunch of it right off will definitely give them diarrhea.
I would cook up big batches of chicken and rice and mix it with her dry food. Just boil whatever chicken pieces are on sale that week, doesn't have to be breasts, remove the meat from the bone, use the water to cook the rice, mix them together. My dog ate that with no problem.

We put weight on our poodle with... ...rice and ground beef. We'd fry up very lean ground beef, drain it, then mix it with cooked, plain white rice (the boil-in-the-bag kind). We'd give her about 1/3 cup of the mixture in the early evening (about two hours before her regular evening meal).
The vet said this was safe (wouldn't cause upset stomach or diarrhea) and recommended we only feed it to her for about two weeks, then let her return to her regular diet. I don't remember exactly how much she gained, but she did fill out in the rib and tummy area, and was always on our heels whenever we made anything with ground beef (guess she thought it was just for her). 8) .
