He does this the whole time he is eating. I get tired watching him. Now the others are doing the same thing.

Oh, Wow! My Cocker Spaniel "Spencer" does that too. I wonder why?
.
Good Morning Grandma! :) Good that makes two of us lol :) Sometimes it drives me a bit crazy! ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
I know. Besides I wonder what the purpose is? Does he always take it to the same spot?
Mine doesn't but just for the heck of it, I'm going to put his bowl on the other side of the kitchen & see if he still does it. Did you try that? .
EBR made a great comment. I'm going to look into that. Read his comment Grandma :) ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
My cat did this until I realized she just didn't like to eat next to my other cat. I moved her dish away and she quit it.
Hmm..interesting..I just might try and put more space between them and see how it works. Thanks! ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
Our Gizmo (toy long-haired chihuahua) does that, too...I thought he was the only one as our other don't do it! How funny! :~) .
I have 4 and they all do it now! :) ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
Our rescue dog, "Lucky Dog," does that because it's a rescue dog and spent some time in the house of another person who rescued it. We're told it had a problem with getting food so it got into the habit of going to the bowl (when it could) and getting a mouthful, then going somewhere else to eat the food (away from where other dogs could steal that food away from it. ) It was supposed to be my youngest daughter's replacement for "Lucky Cat" but that isn't how it worked out.
"I get tired watching him. " I get tired having them.
Poor thing, I can understand why he does that. Yes the one that started the others was my rescue dog...Thank you my friend.. ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
I always thought it was vestigial from when they roamed wild. They would kill or capture their food (another animal, mouse, chipmonk, etc.) out in the forest, and then drag it back to the 'den' in order to eat it.
Okay, that makes sense to me :) Thanks EBR! ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
My dog does the same damn thing. I trained him when he was a pup to back up when I got near his food bowl.......so if I feed him in a room full of people he will carry it else where.....maybe create a quite secluded place to feed him so he doesn't stress when he eats? My dog only does that when I or a bunch of people are in the room.....but if I feed him in another room he will eat normall....
Thank you! I will try it out :) ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
Your dogs behavior may relate back to protection of their food/competition for it. Or, if they view food as plentiful and no competition exists, they may just want to eat slow and space it out which is a good thing. Sometimes when dogs eat too fast they have problems with their stomach.
I know that's true of Labs. My dogs eat separate from each other. The more dominant one eats first, the other one typically waits for him to finish eating, then eats, pausing at times to watch what's going on around her.
Everyone eats and sleeps together. No fighting goes on either..They share food too with no problem.. ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
It sounds like they view the eating process as non-competitive and are enjoying their meal, bringing it to a comfy spot.
You're probably right BosM, they do share the rug area where they go to to eat :) They always leave a few behind and there is always someone to pick up after them..They don't have a problem with that either.. ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
Thats an interesting way to look at it! ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
We have a Basset Hound that does the same thing. This stems back to some instinct from when dogs were in the wild. It comes down to a pecking or hierarchy.
And it does not matter if you have one dog or more than one dog. When dogs are in a pack, there is always a pack leader. It the case of the family dog, the leader is usually us.
But in the wild, there is always a pack leader. Sometimes the leader will find food for the pack, and sometimes a dog in the pack will find food. At home, we are the leader finding food.
The dog will take a piece of food and then walk away to eat it. The leaves the rest for the pack leader. By eating away from the source of food, it eliminates confrontation.
Once the dog has finished the piece he was eating, he will go back to see if there is any left. If there is,(of course there is at home,) he will take another piece. And he will keep doing this until he is full.
Some dogs do not to this. We have another Basset that eats from the bowl and will not walk away until he is done. Since he was here first, before the other dog, he is taking on the actions of the pack leader.
Sort of, "I will eat until I am full and you can have what is left. "We have solved the problem by filling those Kong balls with dried kibble and putting a couple around the house. This way she finds the ball and will carry it to a spot and eat everything in it.
If she is still hungry, she will search out another one. It keeps her happy and we don't have to watch her going back and forth all day to eat.
Interesting,,,maybe thats why he's always looking back at me...Thanks! ArabianKnightress 6 months ago .
The reason for your dog's behavior is often the result of having to fight for his food. As we do not have all the information it is impossible to determine the cause of your dog's food possessiveness. Many dogs from animal shelters exhibit behaviors of food possessiveness along with food aggression.
Food possessiveness can develop into "food aggression. " This is where the dog exhibits his teeth in a threatening fashion if anyone comes near his food when he is eating. This behavior can present a major problem if not curtailed before the food aggression fully develops into a habit.
For information on dog food aggression check out:dogsecretsdiscovered.com/dog_food_aggres... is important to learn to control a dog's food aggression because these aggressive tendencies can increase where someone may be hurt by your dog simply because they got too close while your dog was eating. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
