Well, while "people should only worry about themselves" sound fine, many people are not able to do so. Nearly every modern nation, as an act of national pride actually gives a crap about their fellow citizens. They don't want to see poverty or need and the kind of desperation it creates.
So, they have taxation programs which, aside from paying for roads, etc, also work toward caring for those who cannot care for themselves. Now, if someone born to poverty attempts to improve their condition, a loaf of bread costs the same for them as well as a wealthy person. In other words, there is a tangible bare minimum of living standards which people should be able to afford.
Taxing everyone at the same rate doesn't take this into account. And, in fact, it traps people in poverty. So, the general idea has been that earning beyond a certain standard of living gets taxed more because the money being brought into a household is no longer devoted to the basic needs of food and shelter.
Frankly, they can afford it. And, personally, I take an amount of personal pride in being able to afford to pay more in taxes. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to hang on to all of it.
But, I see and appreciate the need for funds to keep the country running. Consider it a badge of success. And, from that, your impact is greater in taking care of the country you live in.
Further, wealthy people have far more opportunity to make more money through investment of their "disposable" income, they have far more access to financial advisors, etc. These are all good, responsible things to do. But, when there are people struggling just to keep a roof over their heads, it seems frivolous by comparison. My only objection to our current system of taxation is the rampant abuse within government contracts and government spending, including no-bid contracts to military service companies, oil subsidies which keep the economic landscape unbalanced, and similar abuses.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
