I lived in the UK for over two years, during which I also spend a lot of time in Germany. Compared to those two countries our standard of living in South Africa is very, very high. Yes I know Oz is different to those two countries, but still.
Here in Johannesburg it is easy to find work, making a decent living, having enough free time and good options for raising children. I am no fan of the government and the way they do things. But overall I wouldn't live anywhere else, not because of die hard patriotism, but because of lifestyle issues and the way we do things here.
Middle class South Africans I think have higher expectations than their counterparts in Oz, yet at the same time we are more relaxed. It seems contradictory, but that's the experience of many. For once we don't spoil decent meat with tomato sauce.
I myself don't drink Castle (prefer Windhoek).
All in all, it's pretty good living here. Okay, there's crime and there's political corruption and inefficient civil servants, but once you learn to live with the things you can't change and enjoy the good things, life is quite good. We're average middle class, we haven't been too much affected by crime, we take the necessary precautions - barbed wire on the top of the wall, panic buttons for immediate calls to the security company - and we are very happy to carry on living here for the rest of our days (if only those bloomin' Springboks would stop making such p**phols of themselves on the rugby field!).
I'd say, come back home. It sounds like you're a good boertjie, so come back home. And we've got good Castle beer!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
