Why is the day after Thanksgiving such a big shopping day?

In the United States, the day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. There are a few reasons why it is called 'Black Friday'. 1.

The term 'Black Friday' originated from Philadelphia. In 1960s, the streets were full of people and vehicles the day after Thanksgiving, So the Philadelphia police and bus drivers call it "Black Friday". 2.

For retail business, as people started to shop for Christmas, their business records turns from 'red' to 'black'. Why not before Thanksgiving? I think a month of shopping for Christmas is enough and usually people don't prepare for an event too early.

Thanksgiving is also a time where families get together for reunion and they look forward to meet together again for Christmas, and hence that's when they will start to do their Christmas shopping.
