Detroit and Colorado were the teams to beat in the playoffs for a few seasons and they played each other 2 years in a row in the Conference Finals. In 1996 Colorado won and eventually won the Stanley Cup. In 1997 Detroit won and won the Stanley Cup that year.
In the 2002 playoffs where Colorado met Detroit again in the Conference Finals (with considerably different teams from 96-97 mind you but still Colorado had Patrick Roy from years before) Detroit shutout Colorado 2-0 in Game 6 to even the series at 3-3 and 7-0 in Game 7 to win the series. Detroit went on tho win the Stanley Cup that year. Not to mention the Claude Lemeiux hit on Kris Draper that started it all and the brawl on March 26th, 1997 that perpetuated it.
