Why is Washington DC called Washington DC?

Because it is Washington in the D istrict of C olumbia as opposed to the state of Washington The capital of the United States was named in honor of George Washington, and the district was named the Territory of Columbia, because Columbia was a poetic name for the USA in use at that time.
