Why should a person refrain from smoking for 30 minutes before being fit tested with the PORTACOUNT?
We have found that smokers exhale particles for about 30 minutes after smoking. The PORTACOUNT sees these particles as particles that leaked into the mask. The result is that the person being tested will not get as high a fit factor as he/she deserves.
However, he/she may still pass. The worst thing that can happen is that the person will fail the test. Also, 30 minutes may not be long enough for very heavy smokers.
