Yoga studios and classes are a great way to get started on yoga, since you will want a professional instructor to show you if you are doing the various asanas, or poses, correctly. Starting out on your own can be risky, since you will be doing some poses that, if done incorrectly, could potentially harm your neck, back, and shoulders. In yoga you are trying to learn how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, but this most definitely does not include being uncomfortable while you snap your neck.
So try a few classes and then feel free to take off on your own. There are plenty of books and DVDs that can help you deepen your practice, once you've got the basics down. The great thing about these workouts is they are relaxed enough that you can do them even in the confined space of your room.
