If this is a legit company: You won't go to jail (at least not yet). What happens is you will go to court and they will put you on a court ordered payment plan. If you voilate this plan, then you could face jail time.
Don't worry about paying them before the court date, if you get any extra money bring it with you to court and give it there (so it's on record). They are right... Bouncing a check is actually a form of fraud, it is just not enforced. Wait for the summons and appear in court on the date.
If this isn't a legit company: You won't get the summons and nothing further will happen to you, except maybe a few more annoying calls. But seeing how they gave you the money to begin with means they probably are. For your second question: You took out the loan in 2008.
It's now 2012. Its probably not with the original company now, but a debt collector. Debt collectors usually only have your contact info and what is owed.
If you want a statement, call the original company.
(They told me it was a felony and they were going to prosecute me.) Your mom is right, they are scam artists, alert the police NOW. THEY ARE LYING TO YOU. It is not against the law to owe a debt you can't pay, and the most they could do (assuming an investigation shows this is even legal) is garnish wages.
IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO IMPRISON ANYONE FOR OWING A DEBT TO A PRIVATE ENTITY. They are using scare tactics. Do a search online for your rights as a debt holder, and if it turns out they are committing fraud, you can counter-sue them for all your money back.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
