With the abysmal showing of many of our inner city public schools, why are people against vouchers for private schools?

They fear it will hurt public school funding. The children of Texas really have it bad. It seems they're getting hit from both sides.

The Republicans are not adequately funding public schools, but the Democrats won't allow vouchers. One of my daughters is homeschooling her children because she doesn't like public schools. If vouchers were allowed, she would send them to a private school.

Vouchers would solve the issue of religion in school. Parents who don't want their children's school environment to be sterilized of any reference to religion, could send their children to a religious school or a private school that allowed a balance. Vouchers would solve a lot of problems for parents.

If the neighborhood school goes into decline, families wouldn't be forced to sell their home just to send their children to a good school. I think parents should have more choices. There are many, however, who are afraid the poor won't get an equal education to those who are better off..

1 Because it won't improve the public schools that many will still need, but take even more away from them. And voucher schools have not proven to be any magic bullet. The real reason the right wants voucher schools is to break the teachers' unions.

2 yeah, what he ^^ said. It hurts the kids left behind. Each student is money to a school, and when they lose the students, they lose money that benefits the rest of the school.

We have closed another one of our elementary schools this year due to dwindling enrollment..we can't afford to lose any more students to charter or private schools.

3 I don't think the majority of Americans are really against school vouchers, it is the politicians who are against them. The Unions have a strong hold on them! What parent would not want to be able to send their child to a school where they would actually learn.

The teachers unions would fight a voucher system to the death since it would mean their lazy ways would be found out. True there are many good public schools but many of the inner city public schools have teachers that watch the clock even more than the kids do. If these teachers would have to own up to how they are teaching their students maybe things would change.

If parents could take their kids out of the lousy school and send them elsewhere it would be wonderful. Another reason is that great fear of religious schools getting tax dollars. I am a homeowner and I would still have to pay my school taxes even if I decided to send my children to Catholic school. My Parish school has many children attending that are not Catholics but their parents can afford to pay the tuition to send them for a good education.

If the Democratic Party is so much for helping poor people why don't they put their money where their mouth is and let these families have school vouchers. You had to go and get me started Directmale! :) .

4 Let me add that I do not hate teachers and I hope I did not come across that way. My father was a teacher back in the 1950's when teachers did not make big bucks and they did not have large amounts of money to run schools, yet the kids learned and graduated to have decent lives. I guess the was Pre-Unions.
