I was Navy......and the way it worked was.........when you go to A school..........if there's 25 people in your class........then the class gets 25 sets of orders. It was simple. ----------whoever scored the highest in the end, got first pick.
Lowest grades, got last pick. Of the 25 sets of orders.............there's only what's there. So even if you score first.........there's no guarantee one of them will be for Europe.
You can ASK and volunteer for hardship duties.......Adak Alaska, Baharain , Diego Garcia...... (yes, perhaps Korea)........and many of those count as hardship duty, because families, (if you have one) are NOT allowed to accompany you. In the Navy, some of them count as SEA DUTY, even though you are on land. (a bonus, of sorts) Ultimately...........you get sent where the need is.
You can ask and volunteer, but ultimately, they still decide. Sometimes, like when RE-Enlistng, you can haggle and hold out for a desired billet. But the answer can still be NO........and they call your bluff, and tell you to get out then.
It all depends what's available, and how willing they are to work with you........(usually based on your RATE, (job), and how desired it is.
Getting stationed Europe requires a 3 yr minimum comittment.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
