Would Michael Jackson have been nominated for an AMA if he had not died?

Since the AMA nominations are based upon sales figures and the votes are cast online by music fans, Jackson would not have been nominated if not for his death. The album that Jackson was nominated (and won) for was "Number Ones" - released in 2003. Due to his death in June, records sales soared for his solo work and that of his days with the Jackson 5.

Conversations of "wow, we can make a lot of money! " and time in the production studio brought a finished posthumous product to the buying public - after the nominations were announced. At least when Johnny Cash won his awards in 2002 and 2003, passing away 9/12/2003, he had actually released an album in the prior year.

"American IV: When the Man Comes Around" included new material and was released 11/5/2002 http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/cash_johnny/awards.jhtml http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/cash_johnny/326643/album.jhtml.

I do not believe that Michael Jackson would have nominated for an AMA at this time if he had not passed away. The question is simple, why would he be nominated at this time? Was he nominated last year?

The year before? Let’s face it, in the last few years (quite a few) Michael Jackson has been more famous for outrageous behaviour and speculations of inappropriate behaviour than he has for all the great music this talented but flawed individual has created. Now if he had lived and completed the “This is It” concert extravaganza, then he would have had something of merit for the next AMA awards.

I think if he had lived to complete this, then based on what has been compiled of the unfinished show, and due to the lapse between putting anything out, I think Michael Jackson would have been making news and this would have been a major comeback event for him, I think that coupled with his past work would have put him is an excellent place for the next AMA award and he would have been nominated then. I tend to agree with Jentyree that at this moment, and simply because he passed away, they are stealing recognition and accolades from deserving musicians who do have current and amazing music published now. But his death is big news and news of this type attracts attention and it also prompts organizations like AMA to capitalize on the news and do thing like this.

Giving awards to a significant person in time posthumously has been a common practice to honor and show appreciation towards that person’s lifetime achievements and contributions. While in the entertainment industry most stars receive their awards for current success (and while still alive), in other areas such as the military or science, prominent individuals oftentimes receive awards after their death. The medal of honor, for instance, is awarded only if an individual has risked “great self-sacrifice” and mostly the person died either directly in combat or as a result of combat wounds.

Further, the Oscar award has been awarded in 1977 to Peter Finch after his death that year for Best Actor. In science, many awards of recognition have been given posthumously, since the inventor or discoverer of a certain phenomenon may not have been around at the time that his/her discovery or invention was finally accepted. Therefore, as far as the honoring of Michael Jackson is concerned, I think he definitely deserved the awards, even under the somewhat unusual circumstances.

Would he have been nominated for this year’s AMA’s? Well, chances are, since he has been out of the current music scene (and thus out of our minds) for many years, he may not have been nominated this year. However, his brand-new “This Is It” tour would have been well under way, had he not passed on, and the success of this tour would have been undeniable.

He wrote the new, same-titled song for this tour as well, and this may have sparked at least a slight comeback for him not only in Europe, where his tour would have taken place, but likely also here in the United States, since long-time fans would have supported his new efforts to embrace the world once again through his extraordinary talents. Possibly, after his tour was done and people started falling in love with some of his long-awaited new music, he might have been nominated for the following AMA’s and other award shows. However, I think the point here is not whether or not he would have been nominated at the AMA’s, but rather that the awards were (and have always been) meant for an outstanding individual who has set the standards and truly fulfills each categories specifications at that precise moment in time.

While Michael may have been inactive for many years, the fact remains that his untimely death has brought him back into our minds where he freshly remains even 5 months after his death. He was one of the greatest (if not the greatest) performers of all times and his music is timeless. S death only made us relive all the great memories we have of his former days when his music impacted the world and since June, I think it is safe to say that not only have his record sales once again spiked but the world has once again started listening to his music and followed the examples of their idol.

He has made many new fans as well: young individuals, teens and even young children who may have previously been unaware of the magnitude of this pop star have now started listening and dancing to his music that oftentimes predates them by 15, 20 or even 40 years. Since many fans say Michael’s memory and his spirit live on forever, it is only fair to say that this “spirit” may have been with us at the time of the AMA’s as well and his nomination (and win) in the categories Favorite Male Artist in Pop/Rock and in Soul/R&B were only fitting. I don’t think any of the other artists were neglected for not receiving the awards instead of Michael.

Maybe it would have been easier to understand if the award had been entitled “Favorite Male Artist of all times in …. € instead, but I think the awards were not there simply for competition but to honor the most deserving entertainer. The persons who voted for him to win these nominations likely all agreed with each other that he truly deserved these awards, as did probably the stars who did not receive them, since many would likely not dare compare themselves to the King of Pop.

This occurs quite often in award shows. He did have the song "This is it" come out, so it might have been because of the popularity of the song. But it seems that it was a tribute award.

There's a big possibility that he would be nominated. S last single 'This Is It' sounds good, worthy enough to earn a nomination. Plus, that's MJ... we all know how talented and timeless that man is.

After many years, this was his comeback release. It's just natural to people especially to the fans to support this song. The song deserves it too, even I will root for this if it's nominated.

I doubt it. I hate it when award shows do this! Just because someone died doesn't mean they are worthy of taking awards from everyone else.

He didn't have any new music. I can understand if they just honored him, and had a nice tribute and gave him an achievement award.. but really, steal awards from Beyonce, Lady Gaga. I think Michael is good and all, but come on... Seriously?

No. He won all of the awards because when he died, he sold so many albums etc...his wins are directly related to sales and because the music industry feels they owe him and his estate. To leave us all with good memories of him.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
